Construction commenced on a trunk pipeline project dedicated to coal-to-natural gas conversion in the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. This initiative is designed to eventually integrate with the West-East Gas Pipeline project.
The pipeline's total length will reach 780 kilometers and is being developed in three distinct phases. The initial phase encompasses a main trunk line and two branch lines. This first stage is projected to be completed by the close of 2026 and will have a designed annual transmission capacity of 6 billion cubic meters.
Xinjiang possesses a substantial portion of China's estimated coal resources, accounting for 40.6 percent of the national total. The Zhundong coal-to-natural gas production base, located in Changji, is particularly significant, holding proven reserves exceeding 250 billion metric tons.
The project is intended to facilitate the environmentally sound and effective utilization of Xinjiang's coal resources. Furthermore, by connecting to the national pipeline network, it aims to bolster the country's energy security.

Transforming coal into natural gas could reduce reliance on more polluting fossil fuels. It's a pragmatic approach.

Coal-to-gas plants often have significant environmental consequences. Are we sure they're investing enough in carbon capture and storage, or are they just making the problem worse?

Coal-to-gas? Sounds like another smokescreen for continued reliance on fossil fuels. Climate change doesn't care what 'type' of gas it is.

Environmental degradation, loss of local livelihoods. The price of exploitation is never fully known, and the costs are never paid.

Sounds like they are on a good path to help with a new energy transition. I hope future projects continue the same trajectory.
