The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Friday night, solidifying their position at the top of the American League standings. Myles Straw's RBI double ignited the Jays' offense, giving them a lead they wouldn't surrender. This victory marked only the Orioles' second loss this month.
The Orioles entered the series with an impressive 8-1 record in September. The Blue Jays, however, cooled their momentum in the first game of the weekend series, improving their home record to 48-25 at the Rogers Centre.
With this win, the Blue Jays (85-62) maintained the best record in the American League, pulling a full game ahead of the Detroit Tigers. They also hold a three-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the Jays with three hits, while Straw and Isiah Kiner-Falefa each contributed two. The Blue Jays out-hit Baltimore 10-3. Toronto manager John Schneider praised the team's collective effort and the readiness of each player.
The Orioles initially took the lead in the third inning with a run scored by Samuel Basallo. The Jays responded in the fifth inning when Guerrero Jr.'s hit allowed Davis Schneider to score. Straw's crucial RBI double in the sixth inning brought Isiah Kiner-Falefa home, giving the Jays the lead. Ernie Clement and Dalton Varsho further extended Toronto's lead with RBI hits in the seventh inning.
Chris Bassitt pitched five innings for the Blue Jays, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out six. He acknowledged that he wasn't feeling his best. The bullpen, which had been rested the previous day, stepped in and delivered four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The Jays' relievers have been performing well recently, allowing only two earned runs in their last 16 2/3 innings.
Baltimore's starting pitcher, Trevor Rogers, also exited the game after five innings, having allowed three hits, four walks, and one run. The Blue Jays have 15 games remaining in the regular season. Max Scherzer is scheduled to pitch for Toronto in the next game of the series.

Sure, the Blue Jays won, but they still have a long way to go. Let’s wait for the playoffs to see who’s really the best.

The Orioles had a bad night, doesn't mean they're out of contention. Let's not jump to conclusions.
