In Birmingham, police are actively searching for two men involved in the rape of a young Sikh woman, an event that occurred in broad daylight and is regarded as a racially motivated crime. The attack has raised alarms within the local Sikh community, which fears that this incident might represent a broader issue of targeted violence. During the assault, the woman, who is in her 20s, was subjected to a racist insult when one of the attackers told her to "go back to your own country."
Authorities are seeking assistance from the public in locating the suspects, described as two white males—one with a shaven head and heavy build, donned in a dark sweatshirt and gloves, and the other wearing a grey top with a silver zipper. The incident took place shortly before 8:30 AM on Tuesday, September 9, along Tame Road in Oldbury. Chief Superintendent Kim Madill from Sandwell Police emphasized that efforts to track down the individuals responsible are underway, utilizing CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and other investigative means.
Local leaders have expressed significant concern over the attack, prompting a community meeting scheduled at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick to discuss safety strategies and support for the victim. Ch Supt Madill acknowledged the community's fears and reassured them that they are doing everything possible to identify the perpetrators, emphasizing that such incidents are quite uncommon, though there will be increased police presence in the area. Additionally, it was noted that another sexual assault occurred on the same day in West Bromwich, raising further alarms. Sikh Youth UK has stepped in to offer support to the victim and her family during this difficult time.
