Following the recent shooting of a prominent political figure, the State Department announced it would be monitoring the online statements of foreign nationals. The department intends to take action against those who express support for violence or hatred.
Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau stated that individuals who celebrate or trivialize the event are not welcome in the United States. He has instructed consular officials to address such comments and encouraged the public to report any concerning posts made by foreign nationals.
This directive includes monitoring replies to Landau's own social media posts. Previously, the State Department had announced its intention to monitor the social media activity of visa applicants, advising them to make their accounts public.
The State Department has a history of revoking visas for various legal violations. These violations include overstaying visas, as well as more serious offenses such as assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and support for terrorism.
The shooting victim, a conservative activist, was fatally shot during a speaking engagement. The incident occurred at a university in Utah during his "American Comeback Tour." The shooting took place while he was addressing a question about mass shootings involving transgender individuals. Authorities are currently investigating the incident and seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspect.

This is a chilling effect on free expression. People around the world will now be afraid to speak their minds about gun violence.

Is "trivializing" subjective? This ambiguity opens the door for political censorship and further division.

Well done! It's a shame we even have to consider this, but the world is what it is and these are necessary measures.
