Missing Emu Found Safe After Brief Outing in Ibaraki Prefecture

On September 2nd, a missing emu was located resting peacefully in a wooded area not far from its home in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture. The discovery occurred roughly five hours after the owner reported the bird missing. Local police confirmed that the emu was unharmed and showed no signs of injury following its brief adventure. The incident provided a moment of relief for the owner and a curious note for local authorities.

The owner first noticed the emu's absence around 4:50 p.m. The Toride Police Station of the Ibaraki Prefectural Police provided a description of the missing animal. The emu is a two-year-old male, standing at an impressive 1.5 meters in height and measuring between 70 and 80 centimeters in width. It weighs approximately 40 kilograms, making it a substantial bird.

The emu is believed to have escaped from its enclosure located on the residential property. These large birds, which resemble ostriches, are unable to fly. However, they are known for their impressive running abilities, capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. This incident highlights the importance of secure enclosures for these swift creatures. The successful recovery of the emu underscores the quick response of the owner and the fortunate outcome of the situation.

The owner should’ve been more careful. This shouldn’t be treated like a heroic rescue.

All this over an emu? This is the kind of nonsense that clutters our news feeds.

Nature shouldn’t be caged. This incident just highlights how unnatural keeping emus as pets is.

Such a relief! Emus may be common in some places, but they’re still special to their owners.
