A rare fossil of an extinct marine mammal, Neoparadoxia, has been identified in Japan for the first time. This discovery provides valuable insights into the Miocene epoch, a period of significant climate change that occurred approximately 23 to 10 million years ago.
The fossils were unearthed between 1996 and 2000 in Akan, a town within the city of Kushiro, Hokkaido. The remains are estimated to be around 15 million years old. Initially, the fossils were misidentified as Paleoparadoxia, another member of the extinct order Desmostylia. These large, herbivorous marine mammals resembled hippopotamuses and are believed to have inhabited the shallow coastal waters of the ancient North Pacific.
A collaborative effort between Okayama University of Science and the Ashoro Museum of Paleontology in Ashoro, Hokkaido, led to the re-examination of the fossils in 2013. The presence of slightly larger specimens prompted a detailed morphological analysis, which confirmed the identification of Neoparadoxia and significantly expanded the known geographic range of the species.
The discovery also enhanced the understanding of the creature's evolutionary history. The research team found evidence suggesting that Desmostylia, including Paleoparadoxia and Neoparadoxia, flourished during a period of elevated global temperatures around 15 million years ago. The study suggests that their eventual extinction may have been linked to dramatic shifts in Earth’s climate.
The identification of the fossils as Neoparadoxia was a significant achievement, resolving years of uncertainty. The discovery is considered a rare and valuable case, illustrating the relationship between Earth’s climate and the evolutionary trajectory of marine mammals.
