Clive Lewis, the Labour MP for Norwich South and a former shadow minister, has labeled individuals displaying the St George’s Cross as "extremists" who "intimidate the vast majority." His comments followed the placement of British flags on lampposts near the Brook Hotel, a location used to house migrants within his constituency.
Mr. Lewis has criticized Norfolk County Council for its inaction in removing the flags, which were erected a week prior. The hotel in Bowthorpe has been the site of numerous protests in recent weeks, with both anti-migrant and counter-demonstrations taking place.
Speaking to the Eastern Daily Press, Mr. Lewis stated that while some individuals may display the St George’s Cross out of pride, far-right groups are exploiting the flag to mark territory and intimidate those who oppose their views. He expressed concern that these groups are attempting to redefine the flag for their own divisive purposes, undermining the unifying spirit of England's diverse heritage.
Mr. Lewis has communicated residents' concerns to the county council, urging them to address the intimidating message conveyed by extremists using the streets. Following his participation in a counter-protest at the hotel in December, Norfolk Constabulary advised him against attending further demonstrations, citing concerns that his presence could escalate tensions.
In response to Mr. Lewis's calls, Norfolk County Council stated that it is not prioritizing the removal of the flags, citing more pressing road maintenance issues. A council spokesperson acknowledged the presence of flags on streetlights but indicated that their removal is not a priority. The Brook Hotel, like other hotels, has been a focal point for both anti-migrant and counter-demonstrations in recent weeks.

Kudos to Clive for taking a stand! Citizens should feel safe and proud, and flags should uplift all of us, not alienate.

What Clive fails to recognize is that flags can inspire pride and belonging—not just division and intimidation.

Clive's point about the far-right exploiting national symbols resonates deeply. We need to reclaim our flag for unity, not division!

Clive is absolutely right. The flag should unite us, not be a symbol of intimidation for others in our communities.

We need to support leaders who speak out against hatred and unite our communities instead of allowing symbols to be misused!

What’s next, Clive? Will we be condemned for wearing the colors of our football teams? This is absurd!

So glad to see someone in Parliament taking the flag-bearers of division head-on. Clive has my full support!
