King Charles has briefly paused his summer holiday in Scotland to bestow a significant honour upon a prominent member of the Royal Family who does not undertake official duties. While the Royal Family is spending time together at Balmoral Castle, the 76-year-old monarch has undertaken an official duty. Buckingham Palace announced that the King has appointed Princess Anne’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
The honour was presented to the 70-year-old Sir Timothy at Balmoral Castle. This is the highest rank within the Order, which recognizes individuals for their personal service to the Royal Family or the monarch. It is understood that the King conducted the investiture privately on August 21st, acknowledging Sir Timothy's years of public service. Sir Timothy has expressed his delight and will wear the insignia for the first time at the State Banquet for President Trump next month. He previously held the title of Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. According to reports, he is the only non-working member of the extended Royal Family to receive this distinction.
Although not a working royal, Sir Timothy plays a crucial role in the monarchy. He frequently accompanies Princess Anne, 75, on significant royal engagements both within the UK and internationally. Having married The Princess Royal in 1992, Sir Timothy is also known to have positive relationships with other members of the Royal Family, including Anne’s children and grandchildren. In a documentary celebrating Princess Anne's 70th birthday in 2020, her son Peter described his stepfather as a "very strong support" for his mother, highlighting his understanding of the family's dynamics and expectations.

Surely there are more deserving people who contribute to society than this…
