Israel Launches Gaza City Offensive Amidst Ceasefire Talks

The Israeli military has initiated the initial stages of an operation to seize control of Gaza City and has mobilized 60,000 reservists. This action coincides with the government's consideration of a new ceasefire proposal aimed at ending the nearly two-year conflict.

In a video statement, Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin announced the commencement of "the next phase of the war," designated as phase two of Operation Gideon's Chariots. He stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had already begun preliminary actions, with troops positioned on the outskirts of Gaza City. This move signifies Israel's intention to intensify its offensive on Gaza City, a plan approved by the country's security cabinet.

The plans have drawn international criticism and domestic protests. Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, condemned the plans, accusing Israel of disregarding efforts to broker a ceasefire and hostage-release deal. Mr. Defrin described Hamas as a weakened organization after months of fighting, vowing to inflict further damage on Hamas in Gaza City, which he called a stronghold of governmental and military terror.

Defense Minister Israel Katz approved the military's plan to conquer Gaza City and authorized the call-up of approximately 60,000 reservists. A military official confirmed that active-duty troops would lead the offensive in Gaza City. This move adds pressure on Hamas as mediators await Israel's official response to the latest ceasefire proposal.

The Israeli government faces growing pressure to end the war. Germany expressed difficulty understanding how the actions would lead to the release of hostages or a ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron warned that the offensive could lead to disaster and drag the region into a permanent war.

The Israeli military also announced the extension of service for an additional 20,000 reservists. Human rights groups have warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where displacement, destruction, and the threat of famine are prevalent.

A military official revealed that the operation would target areas of Gaza City where Hamas is believed to be active, including the Zeitoun and Jabaliya neighborhoods. The official added that Israeli troops would target Hamas's extensive underground tunnel network.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently stated the war's objective is to secure the release of hostages and prevent future threats from Hamas and other militants. The current conflict began with a Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023, resulting in casualties and abductions. Israel's offensive has caused a significant number of casualties, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The planned offensive has intensified international condemnation and raised concerns about further displacement of Palestinians.
