Residents in the vicinity of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's California residence have been alerted about air quality concerns due to wildfire smoke originating from the Gifford Fire in central California. This fire, which began on August 1st, has become the largest wildfire in the state this year. An air quality advisory has been issued for the Bay Area, as smoke from the fire is drifting into the region. As of Tuesday morning, the fire had consumed 122,065 acres.
Air quality officials have emphasized that wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter and other harmful pollutants, making exposure unhealthy even for brief periods. The elderly, children, and individuals with respiratory illnesses are particularly susceptible. To minimize exposure, officials recommend staying indoors until smoke levels decrease. Residents are also advised to consult the EPA Fire and Smoke Map for current air quality information.
Lyz Bantilan, a public information officer for The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, reported numerous complaints of ash and smoke. She advised that the best protection during a wildfire is to remain indoors with windows and doors closed, and to utilize an air purifier if possible. Smoke and ash can irritate the respiratory system, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, headaches, and nausea. For those unable to avoid outdoor exposure, she recommended wearing properly fitted N95 masks to reduce inhalation of harmful particles.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reside in Montecito, California, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Their property spans five acres and includes a nine-bedroom, sixteen-bathroom home, a pool, a tennis court, extensive gardens, and a chicken coop. The estate also features a five-car garage, a guesthouse, a spa, a wine cellar, a gym, a library, and a tea house. Earlier this year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex met with the city's mayor and emergency workers involved in combating the Eaton Fire, expressing their support and visiting affected families.
