U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed a special attorney, Ed Martin, to investigate mortgage fraud allegations against Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The Justice Department is also investigating James regarding her civil fraud case against President Trump.
Martin is investigating Schiff and James, both prominent Democratic opponents of the president. Grand juries in Virginia and Maryland will investigate the allegations. Martin met with Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, who sent criminal referrals on both Schiff and James.
Preet Bharara, representing Schiff, called the allegations against the senator false. The probe of James focuses on whether her office violated Trump's legal rights through civil lawsuits, and whether the NRA's rights were violated.
James successfully sued Trump for fraudulent misrepresentations. Her office also sued the NRA with mixed results. The FBI and Justice Department began their probe of the mortgage fraud allegations against James in the spring.
Bharara criticized Martin, calling him partisan. An attorney for James, Abbe Lowell, called the probe a political retribution campaign.
