A representative from Premium Automobiles is preparing to enter a guilty plea on behalf of the company concerning a serious charge related to unsafe lift operations, which allegedly caused an explosion at their Audi service center located in Ubi. The explosion, which occurred in March 2023, necessitated the evacuation of around 100 people and resulted in one individual requiring hospitalization. The court has scheduled the plea date for September 10 following a recent status hearing on August 8.
The charge against Premium Automobiles is grounded in the Building Maintenance and Strata Management regulations, accusing the company of operating a hydraulic lift in a hazardous manner and neglecting to halt its operation immediately. The incident is linked to the lift motor being operated near a waste oil tank, which the company had installed in the same machine room, leading to the explosion. Reports from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reveal that a section of the building's exterior wall was damaged, but by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already died down.
When it comes to penalties, the regulations stipulate that individuals found guilty of operating a lift dangerously face potential jail time of up to one year and fines that can reach S$20,000 (approximately US$15,580). However, since the accused party in this case is a corporation, only the financial penalty will be applicable.

Let's hope the fine reflects the severity of the incident. Safety first.

S$20,000 fine? That's pocket change for a company like Premium Automobiles. A joke.

It's a relief no one was seriously hurt. Hopefully, they've learned from this.

I bet they'll spin this to their advantage in marketing now.

The court should make an example of them to deter similar incidents from happening.
