Scherzer and Kershaw Face Off in a Must-See Pitching Battle

The prospect of a postseason clash between Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw is exciting for baseball fans. However, the anticipation won't have to linger. These two likely future Hall of Famers are set to face each other on Friday in a rare contest featuring two of the most recent additions to the 3,000-strikeout club.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the rarity of such a matchup, expressing his respect for Scherzer and hoping for a favorable outcome for his team. Scherzer and Kershaw are widely regarded as two of the greatest pitchers of their generation, each having won World Series titles and three Cy Young Awards. Scherzer, at 41, boasts eight All-Star selections, while the 37-year-old Kershaw has 11, including a recent Legend Pick.

Scherzer reached the 3,000-strikeout milestone in September 2021 while pitching for the Dodgers. Kershaw joined him last month, making them, along with Justin Verlander, the only active pitchers to have achieved this feat. Scherzer expressed his admiration for Kershaw, highlighting their long careers and the limited opportunities to compete against such elite talent. He emphasized the excitement of facing the best, anticipating a thrilling contest.

Despite the high expectations, such matchups don't always deliver on the hype. In a September 2023 encounter between Scherzer and Verlander, another pairing of accomplished pitchers, Scherzer struggled, while Verlander performed well.

Dodgers rookie left-hander Jack Dreyer, who shares a clubhouse with Kershaw, emphasized the work ethic that sets these pitchers apart. He noted their dedication and commitment to improvement, particularly Kershaw's relentless effort.

Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly, who managed Kershaw during his time with the Dodgers, highlighted their meticulous approach to the game. He credited former Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt for helping Kershaw develop a slider, which significantly enhanced his effectiveness.

Friday's game at Dodger Stadium is a series opener between division leaders. The Blue Jays lead the AL East, while the Dodgers hold a narrow lead in the NL West. Scherzer emphasized the importance of focusing on the overall goal of winning, rather than getting caught up in the individual matchup. He acknowledged the Dodgers' status as reigning World Series champions and the desire to compete against them.

This is what baseball is all about—seeing the greats like Scherzer and Kershaw competing against each other!

They talk a big game about their strikeouts, but can they actually deliver when it counts? Doubtful.

I’d be more interested if these guys could show they still have what it takes. Experience isn’t everything.

Another overhyped matchup that will likely disappoint. Scherzer and Kershaw have had their moments, but I’m not expecting fireworks this time.

Both have had incredible careers and still play at such a high level. This matchup is a special treat for us fans.
