Indonesia Sees Rise in Tourist Arrivals, But Spending Declines

In June 2025, Indonesia saw a rise in foreign tourist arrivals, according to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on Friday. The total number of visitors reached 1.42 million, reflecting an increase compared to the previous month and the same period the prior year.

The June figures represented an 8.42 percent increase from May 2025 and an 18.2 percent increase compared to June 2024. A BPS official noted that the majority of these visits were from Australian tourists, with increased flights to Bali contributing to the rise in arrivals through Ngurah Rai Airport.

Analyzing the origin of visitors, Malaysia accounted for the largest share at 16.7 percent. Singapore followed with 13.0 percent, and Australia contributed 10.9 percent of the total foreign visitors.

From January to June 2025, the cumulative foreign tourist arrivals reached 7.05 million. This represented a 9.44 percent increase compared to the same six-month period in 2024.

However, despite the growing number of tourists, the average spending per visitor decreased during the second quarter of 2025. The average expenditure per visit fell to 1,199.71 U.S. dollars, a decrease from the previous quarter.

Increased flights to Bali? That's great for Bali, but what about the rest of Indonesia? We need to spread the wealth.

This report sounds one-sided. What are the potential downsides of increased tourism? More traffic? More pollution?
