Chinese Embassy in Honduras Condemns Honduran Candidate's Taiwan Remarks

The Chinese Embassy in Honduras issued a strong statement on Tuesday, expressing its opposition and condemnation of remarks made by a Honduran presidential candidate in the United States regarding the Taiwan question and China-Honduran relations. The embassy stated that the candidate's comments seriously violated the one-China principle.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Honduras emphasized that the candidate's remarks sent an incorrect signal to "Taiwan independence" separatists, contradicting international trends and historical progress. The embassy urged the candidate to immediately cease and rectify their statements and actions concerning Taiwan, urging them to uphold the one-China principle and handle Taiwan-related issues with caution.

The statement followed reports that Honduran opposition presidential candidate Nasry Asfura had stated his intention to restore relations with Taiwan and potentially move Honduras closer to the island. He also indicated he would review agreements signed between the Honduran government and China.

The embassy reiterated that Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. The one-China principle is a fundamental principle in international relations, a widely accepted international agreement, and the political foundation for China's bilateral relations with 183 countries, including Honduras.

The embassy highlighted the positive developments in China-Honduras relations since establishing diplomatic ties based on the one-China principle in March 2023. They noted significant achievements in practical cooperation that have benefited both nations and expressed a commitment to continue promoting friendly cooperation based on mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and common development.
