The United Kingdom will recognize Palestine as a state in September if Israel does not take specific actions to address the situation in Gaza, according to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Speaking to reporters, Starmer outlined the conditions for this recognition, which include a ceasefire in Gaza, a commitment to halt the annexation of territory in the West Bank, and a pledge to work towards a two-state solution.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy, speaking at the United Nations headquarters, explained that the U.K. government's decision was made because the two-state solution is at risk. He emphasized that the rejection of a two-state solution by the Israeli government is morally and strategically wrong, harming the interests of the Israeli people and hindering the path to peace.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the U.K.'s decision, stating that it rewards Hamas's actions and punishes its victims. Israel's Foreign Ministry also condemned the U.K.'s move, viewing it as a reward for Hamas that undermines efforts to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated he did not discuss the decision with Starmer during their meeting. He also addressed the situation in Gaza, mentioning the U.S.'s efforts to provide food and eliminate barriers to humanitarian aid.
Following the announcement, Starmer spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to take immediate action to lift restrictions on aid access to Gaza. He also spoke with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and King Abdullah II of Jordan regarding the U.K.'s plan.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would recognize Palestine as a state and formalize this decision at the U.N. General Assembly in September. Netanyahu strongly condemned this decision, stating that it rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy.
The international pressure has mounted on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza, leading to measures such as daily humanitarian pauses in fighting and airdrops. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists 149 countries that currently recognize the state of Palestine.
