Shandong Carrier Group Demonstrates Combat Readiness in Far Seas Training

In February 2025, aircraft takeoff assistants from the takeoff and landing support squadron aboard the Chinese PLA Navy's aircraft carrier Shandong signaled the launch of a J-15T carrier-borne fighter jet. This occurred after confirming the aircraft was in optimal condition.

During a recent far seas training operation, the Shandong launched J-15 fighter jets to deter foreign aircraft engaged in close-in reconnaissance. Official media reported that the carrier encountered foreign aircraft attempting to harass the vessel. The aircraft takeoff and landing support squadron swiftly scrambled fighter jets to address the situation. A naval officer emphasized the need for precision and accuracy in the support process to ensure rapid fighter jet deployment.

The PLA Navy's social media account highlighted that the Shandong, during a dual-carrier group training mission, quickly launched fighter jets to counter a foreign military aircraft attempting close-range harassment. The foreign aircraft subsequently retreated. CCTV military channel also reported that foreign vessels and aircraft repeatedly conducted close-in reconnaissance and surveillance during the training. The squadron successfully executed carrier-based fighter jet launch operations, even during a late-night scenario. A crew member stated their commitment to all-weather response capabilities.

According to Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military affairs expert, the Shandong's rapid fighter jet launch capability against unidentified aerial targets demonstrates the carrier group's strong combat readiness and emergency response proficiency. This performance confirms successful operational tests of the command crew, pilots, and aircraft, achieving deeper integration and meeting the demands of maritime warfare. He further noted that these flight operations, including night and adverse weather sorties, reflect significant improvements in the carrier group's reconnaissance, early warning, command-and-control systems, and emergency combat capacity. The carrier's air wing has achieved full all-weather operational capability, enhancing its comprehensive combat capability for far seas defense missions.
