Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, commented on the actions of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities. She stated that their strategy of using "decoupling and breaking chains" across the Taiwan Straits as a bargaining tool with the United States, along with a "pledge of loyalty," would ultimately leave the Taiwan region more susceptible to exploitation by the US.
These remarks were made during a Wednesday press briefing, addressing increasing concerns regarding the DPP authorities' response to US tariff threats. The DPP authorities have reportedly proposed eliminating tariffs as the foundation for discussions with the US, committing to removing trade barriers without implementing reciprocal measures.
Media reports indicate widespread skepticism within Taiwan's business community. Many believe the DPP authorities' decision will negatively impact the island's agriculture, fisheries, and grassroots industries. Zhu further criticized the US's "America First" policy, which she argued has utilized tariffs globally, disrupting the multilateral trading system and the global economic order. She suggested that the DPP's promotion of the "return of Taiwan businesses" and the "new southbound policy" had become a source of ridicule.
Instead of adjusting their approach, the DPP authorities have intensified their efforts, employing the "decoupling and breaking chains" strategy as a bargaining chip and offering a "pledge of loyalty" in negotiations with the US. Zhu warned that this approach would only increase Taiwan's vulnerability to US exploitation, potentially weakening its competitive industries and transforming the region into a dumping ground for US agricultural products, ultimately harming Taiwan's economic development and the well-being of its people.
Zhu emphasized that Taiwan secession is not a viable path and that relying on external forces is unreliable. She added that the Chinese mainland welcomes industries and farmers from Taiwan to engage in exchanges, cooperation, and integrated development on the mainland. The mainland's economy, she stated, possesses a strong foundation, resilience, and significant potential, offering the best opportunities for investment and growth for businesses and individuals from the Taiwan region, as well as providing a safeguard against external risks.

Safeguard against external risks"? Isn't the CCP the biggest external risk Taiwan faces?

The DPP's actions seem short-sighted. They need to consider the economic consequences.
