Ceasefire Efforts in Sweida Province Amid Renewed Violence

On July 19, 2025, members of the Syrian security forces were seen patrolling the outskirts of Sweida province, signaling the start of a crucial phase in peacekeeping efforts. The deployment by interim authorities is part of an agreement designed to curtail the recent spate of violent confrontations fueled by sectarian tensions. This first phase of the ceasefire involves the separation of warring factions, including local groups and tribal forces, contributing to a broader strategy aimed at restoring order and peace in the area.

In addition to military interventions, a government emergency committee has been established to coordinate humanitarian responses. This committee, comprising various public institutions, is tasked with delivering urgent medical and humanitarian aid, as well as repairing the damaged infrastructure critical for the local population. Following these immediate interventions, plans are in place for later phases that aim to reinforce the rule of law and gradually re-establish governmental and security presence throughout Sweida.

Despite these cautious steps towards stabilization, reports indicate that tensions remain high. On the same day as the deployment, violence resurfaced in western Sweida, where heavy gunfire erupted, challenging the viability of the truce. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has noted that fighting continues between rival armed groups, particularly between Druze and Bedouin factions, reflecting the fragile nature of the current ceasefire efforts.
