The Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a notice following reports of two Chinese tourists losing their lives due to the effects of Typhoon Wipha. The embassy urged Chinese nationals in Thailand to exercise caution due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
The Bangkok Post reported that strong winds and stormy seas, remnants of Typhoon Wipha, had caused the deaths of two Chinese tourists. One incident involved a 53-year-old woman, Wang Yang, who was killed by a falling tree on Koh He island in Phuket. Her husband sustained minor injuries. Another incident resulted in the death of Shin Yushi, 34, who drowned off Koh Lanta in Krabi province.
The embassy's official WeChat account stated that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was affecting parts of northern, central-eastern, and southern Thailand due to tropical storms and the southwest monsoon. The embassy advised Chinese nationals to remain vigilant and prepare for strong winds and heavy rain.
The notice further instructed Chinese nationals to closely monitor weather forecasts and avoid hazardous areas. They were advised to adjust travel plans based on weather updates and disaster warnings. The embassy recommended avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities during heavy rain and taking precautions against lightning and rain if they must go out. This included staying away from potential hazards like large trees and utility poles. When driving, they were urged to reduce speed and avoid flooded areas.
The embassy also warned of potential flash floods, particularly in northern regions, due to heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation. Chinese nationals were advised to avoid mountainous areas, riverbanks, and other dangerous zones.
Additionally, the embassy noted strong winds and rough seas in southern Thailand, Pattaya, and nearby coastal areas. Chinese nationals were reminded to carefully plan their trips and exercise caution during island-hopping and other sea activities.

The embassy is just trying to cover their backs in case something happens. Very unnecessary!

Two lives lost is tragic. It's wise for the embassy to ensure tourists are aware of potential hazards.

It’s a bit patronizing to think travelers can't figure out how to stay safe on their own.
