China has begun constructing a hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo River, with a groundbreaking ceremony in Nyingchi, Xizang. Premier Li Qiang announced the project, which includes five hydropower stations and an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan investment.
The project aims to supply electricity externally and locally, approved by the central government to aid carbon reduction and climate change efforts. It will also spur solar and wind energy development, creating a clean energy base.
Li emphasized high-quality project development, economic and social progress, and improving well-being. He called for advanced technologies, ecological conservation, and careful community relocation.
During his visit, Li also inspected the Sichuan-Xizang Railway and a modern agriculture zone in Lhasa. He highlighted the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry for income and growth, and urged efforts to promote new technologies. He affirmed Xizang's achievements and called for stability, development, and ecological protection.
