Kurtley Beale will captain the First Nations & Pasifika XV team in Melbourne for Tuesday's match against the British & Irish Lions. This marks Beale's second opportunity to face the Lions on tour.
The experienced flyhalf, with 95 caps, was previously sidelined by a hamstring injury, preventing him from playing against the tourists for Western Force. Now recovered, the 36-year-old will lead a strong backline at Dockland's Stadium.
Coach Toutai Kefu highlighted Beale's experience as the primary reason for his captaincy selection. Beale is one of six indigenous players in the team, with the remainder of the squad composed of players with Pacific island heritage.
Several players, including Taniela Tupou and Filipo Daugunu, were released from the Wallabies squad for this match, offering them a chance to impress the coach. The team also features a formidable back row and a second row eager to prove themselves.
Former Australia loose forward Pete Samu was unable to participate due to a tour agreement stipulation. Despite this, Kefu believes his team is capable of defeating the Lions. He emphasized the team's blend of youth, experience, and diverse cultures. The Lions, who won the first test, will announce their team on Monday.

This feels like a token gesture to include indigenous players rather than a genuine effort to promote their talent.

So glad that injured players have the chance to recover and play in such an important match!

The hype around Beale distracts from the younger talents who could use this opportunity.

Kefu’s comments about youth and experience sound more like empty words than a solid strategy.
