Zhu Yuling and Wang Chuqin Claim Singles Titles at Inaugural 2025 WTT US Smash in Las Vegas

The 2025 WTT US Smash singles finals concluded on Sunday evening. Zhu Yuling, representing the Macao Special Administrative Region, secured her first career Smash women's singles title by defeating Chinese player Chen Yi with a score of 4-2. In the men's singles, Wang Chuqin triumphed over his long-time rival Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan, winning 4-0.

The inaugural Smash event, held in Las Vegas, saw Team China dominate, claiming three titles and two runner-up finishes. Besides the singles victories, Lin Shidong and Kuai Man won the mixed doubles. The women's doubles gold and silver medals were secured by Wang Yidi/Kuai Man and Sun Yingsha/Wang Manyu, respectively.

The women's singles final saw Chen Yi start strong, winning the first two games. However, Zhu Yuling adapted to Chen's playing style, leveling the score at 2-2. Zhu's experience and Chen's errors led to Zhu's victory with a final score of 4-2.

The men's final was less contested, with Wang Chuqin maintaining control throughout the match. Despite Harimoto's attempts to vary his tactics, Wang swept all four games, marking his 14th career win against the Japanese star. Wang acknowledged that his best performance was in the round of 16, and he identified areas for improvement. He attributed his victory to maintaining a steady mindset.

Zhu Yuling reflected on her comeback, stating that both finalists gave their all. She expressed gratitude for the support and described the experience as extraordinary. Sports commentator Wang Dazhao noted the contrasting mindsets behind the victories, highlighting the difference between a player in their prime and one who has returned after illness.

This victory marks Zhu's first WTT main tour title since retiring from China's national team four years ago due to thyroid cancer. Zhu is also an associate professor at Tianjin University. She has developed an advanced table tennis course, established a training studio, and built a campus tournament system. She emphasized her desire to update her technique and understanding of the sport. Zhu credited her students and the university for giving her confidence. She stated that she will remain calm regardless of her choices, as it will not change the life she wants to live.

4-0? That men's final sounds boring. Where's the competitive spirit?
