China's Supreme People's Court Launches Online Archive of 5,000 Prominent Legal Cases

In a significant development announced on Wednesday, China's Supreme People's Court revealed that an online archive featuring over 5,000 prominent legal cases has been established in the past 17 months. Launched on February 27, 2024, the archive documents a total of 5,040 cases and covers a wide array of common criminal charges and prevalent conflict reasons. Among these cases, roughly 43 percent pertain to civil issues, while nearly 38 percent are related to criminal activities.

The Supreme People's Court indicated that this online archive has drawn in more than six million visitors, including over one million registered users from over 120 different countries. The archive was created to provide easy access for citizens seeking information on landmark civil, criminal, administrative, enforcement, and state compensation cases. This initiative aims to address public concerns regarding legal matters such as psychological abuse, cyberbullying, telecom fraud, domestic violence, and justified defense.

Moreover, the online platform serves to standardize verdicts, improve legal services, and promote transparency within the judicial system. As users delve into the cases available on the archive, they can also discover the specific laws applied and the rationale behind the court's decisions.

An online archive won't fix the fundamental issues in China's legal system. It's just a band-aid solution.
