Cleverly Warns Reform UK of "Disgruntled Conservative" Image

Sir James Cleverly has cautioned Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, about the potential perception of becoming a haven for former disgruntled Conservatives. His remarks followed the defection of Sir Jake Berry, a former Conservative chairman, to Reform.

Cleverly urged his party to remain optimistic despite trailing both Labour and Reform in opinion polls, drawing a historical parallel to the Conservatives' resilience after significant setbacks. He emphasized that Reform would now be judged on its ability to manage local services in the councils it controls. He also criticized Reform's composition, which includes former Conservative figures, questioning their claim of being a departure from traditional parties.

He warned against further defections from the Conservative Party, suggesting that it is predictable for ambitious politicians to gravitate towards the party with higher poll ratings. He also stated that former Conservatives who switch parties lose credibility if they cite being ousted by voters as the reason for their change. Cleverly argued that Reform would face consequences if it failed to deliver for voters in areas under its control.

Cleverly encouraged his fellow Conservatives to remain resolute, citing the party's history of adaptation and success. He shared his personal experience of the party's recovery after a poor performance in European Parliament elections, which was followed by a significant victory in the 2019 General Election. He also cautioned against changing the party leader, highlighting the current leader's achievements in influencing government policy.

The former cabinet minister also expressed reservations about withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights, noting that other countries are also facing challenges with foreign criminals and that the ECHR is not a simple solution. He also criticized the idea of a populist government dismantling the existing system, comparing it to a Formula One team attempting a radical car redesign mid-race.

This is just more gaslighting. They're losing because they've failed.
