In Chuncheon, South Korea, K-pop stars RM and V of the group BTS were discharged from their mandatory military service. They saluted as they were released, greeted by cheering fans.
The two members began their service in December 2023. Other BTS members, Jin, J-Hope, and Suga, were already serving their time. Jin was discharged in June 2024, and J-Hope in October. Jimin and JungKook are expected to be discharged soon.
Suga is fulfilling his duty as a social service agent, an alternative to military service, and is scheduled to be released later this month. The group plans to reunite as a whole in 2025.
South Korean law mandates that all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 complete 18-21 months of military service. Exemptions are available for certain athletes and artists who have achieved top honors. K-pop stars are not typically granted these exemptions.
The BTS members were able to postpone their service due to a revision of the Military Service Act, which allowed K-pop stars to delay enlistment until age 30. Public discussion arose regarding potential special exemptions for the group, but in 2022, their management agency announced that all seven members would fulfill their military obligations.
