Eight U.S. Newspapers Sue OpenAI and Microsoft for Copyright Infringement
Eight major U.S. newspapers have filed a joint lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing the tech giants of "purloining millions" of copyrighted news articles without permission or payment to train their AI chatbots.
The lawsuit, filed in a New York federal court this week, includes prominent publications such as the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, and others. In a statement, Frank Pine, executive editor for the MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing, expressed outrage at the alleged theft of their intellectual property.
"We have spent billions of dollars gathering information and reporting news at our publications," Pine stated. "We cannot allow OpenAI and Microsoft to expand the Big Tech playbook of stealing our work to build their own businesses at our expense."
The lawsuit also includes MediaNews Group's Mercury News, Orange County Register, and St. Paul Pioneer-Press, and Tribune Publishing's Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel. All are owned by Alden Global Capital.
OpenAI responded to the lawsuit, stating that they were unaware of Alden Global Capital's concerns but are actively engaged in discussions with news organizations to explore opportunities and address concerns.
This lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges faced by OpenAI and Microsoft. The companies are already facing copyright lawsuits from the New York Times, other media outlets, and bestselling authors, such as John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, and George R.R. Martin. They also face another set of lawsuits in San Francisco's federal court.

If OpenAI and Microsoft get away with this, it will set a terrible precedent for the future of journalism and intellectual property rights.

This lawsuit could have a significant impact on the future of AI development. It's important to establish clear rules about how AI can use copyrighted material.

It's about time someone stood up to these tech giants who think they can just take whatever they want. News content is valuable, and it deserves to be protected.

It seems like the newspapers are just trying to cash in on the success of AI. They should be collaborating with OpenAI and Microsoft, not suing them.

This lawsuit is just another example of how the traditional media is trying to protect its own interests at the expense of progress.

This lawsuit could set a dangerous precedent that could stifle the development of AI for good.

I'm glad to see that the newspapers are fighting back against these tech bullies. It's important to send a message that they can't get away with this.

I hope this lawsuit sends a message to other tech companies that they can't just take whatever they want from the media.
